PENTECOSTAL WORSHIP

The focus of this study will be the nine gifts of the Spirit referred
to in the 12th-14th chapters of 1Corinthians.  These gifts are given to  the church and are to be a definite part of
worship. It is the will of God through the Holy Spirit  that the gifts are actively In use in the worship service.
Remember that “the gifts of the prophets  are subject to the prophet”.  May the Lord bless us as we move to a closer
relationship with Him.

I. What are these gifts?

A. They are the "CARISMATA"

GIFT: Strong's # 5486 charisma (khar'-is-mah);
from 5483; a (divine) gratuity, i.e. Deliverance (from danger or passion); (specifically) a (spiritual) endowment,
i.e. (subjectively) religious qualification, or (objectively) miraculous faculty:  KJV-- (free) gift.

1. They belong to the church
1 Cor 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

1 Cor 12:14 For the body is not one member, but many.

1 Cor 12:28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after
that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

2. These gifts are for the church - Subject to the Holy Spirit

1 Cor 12:4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

1 Cor 12:11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

3. These gifts operate through the yielded believer.

They come when we receive the gift (DOREA) of the Holy Ghost.
They are Spiritual Endowments (CHARISMATA) "Things of the Spirit"(PNEUMATATICOS) They are distinct from   the
baptism in the Holy Ghost.
Which is the beginning of  life in the power of Christ.

B. The Gifts...

1 Cor  12:8 For  to one is given by the Spirit  the word of wisdom;  to
another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9 To another faith by
the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10
To  another the working of miracles;  to another  prophecy;  to another
discerning of spirits;  to another divers kinds of tongues;  to another
the interpretation of tongues:

The Gifts are divided into 3 distinctive groups, according to mode of operation.

1. THE GIFTS OF REVELATION

A.  WORD OF KNOWLEDGE
B.  WORD OF WISDOM
C.  DISCERNING OF SPIRITS

2. THE GIFTS OF POWER

A. FAITH
B. WORKING OF MIRACLES
C. GIFTS OF HEALING

3. THE VERBAL GIFTS

A. PROPHESY
B. TONGUES
C. INTERPRETATION OF TONGUES

II. What these gifts are not!

A. They are not the property of the individual.

1 Cor 12:6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same
God which worketh all in all.

1 Cor 12:11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit,
dividing to every man severally as he will.

B. They are not for the exaltation of the flesh, or the individual.

Gal 6:14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our
Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto
the world.

1 Cor 13:4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not;
charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

1 Cor 13:5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not
easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

C. They are not to bring in confusion

1 Cor 14:26 How is it then, brethren? When ye come together, every one
of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation,
hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.

1 Cor 14:32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the
prophets.

1 Cor 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in
all churches of the saints.

D. They are not to take president over the Word.

1Cor 1:21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew
not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them
that believe.

Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word
of God.

Gal 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel
unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be
accursed.

Gal 1:9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any
other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

III. What these gifts are for...

A. They enhance our worship of God
1 Cor 12:3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by
the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that
Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.

1 Cor 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto
men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit
he speaketh mysteries.

Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we
know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself
maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

B. The Gifts are for the edification of the body of Christ.

1 Cor 14:4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but
he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

1 Cor 14:12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts,
seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.

1 Cor 14:31 For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and
all may be comforted.

C. They are for the edification of the individual.

1 Cor 14:4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but
he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we
know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself
maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

D. They are signs for the unbeliever.
1 Cor 14:22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe,
but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that
believe not, but for them which believe.

E. The Gifts are to help the church fulfil the mission of Christ.

1 Cor 12:28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles,
secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts
of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

F. They are to be the rule and not the exception in the church.

IV. Conditions for their operation.

A. Fear of these Gifts bind faith and cease the operation of the Spirit in the church.

1. Fear of people.
Prov 29:25 The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his
trust in the LORD shall be safe.

2. Fear of failure

3. Fear of Fanaticism.

2  Tim  1:6 Wherefore  I put thee in remembrance that thou stir  up the
gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.  7 For God
hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of
a sound mind.

B. Three essentials.
1. Gifts are the gift of the church. Gifts alone can produce Fanaticism.

2. Government is for keeping order in the church. Government alone will produce tyranny.
1 Cor 12:28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles,
secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts
of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
